Bullying is a big problem, but it is only a symptom. Saying that bullying is wrong hasn’t worked—and where do they turn to release their anger? I don’t support bullying as a way to express anger, but we must supply alternatives. It’s not healthy to keep it in, and Americans are already repressed enough in exploring and expressing their feelings.

I believe what everyone should do is stop judging others—stop disapproving of them and saying there is something wrong with them. There are more important things than if you wear glasses; if you’re overweight, short, or gay; if you wear offbrand clothing; if you’re a virgin; if you have a lisp; or if you’re inexperienced at something. There is no standard for humanity, despite ignorant old people saying there is and that everyone who strays from it is a bad person. Bullying is only a symptom. Let’s treat the cause.

Update: I found a quote that I believe describes bullying’s cause well.

The healthy man does not torture others – generally it is the tortured who turn into torturers.

Full Iraq withdrawal by Christmas! Over 100,000* Americans, American allies, combatants, and innocent Iraqis (the majority of that number) are dead, US soldiers are still in Afghanistan, the government is still trillions of dollars in debt, oil is still ridiculously expensive, the misery index is over 10%, drug users are in prison while child molesters and rapists walk free, people are being brutally arrested and imprisoned for exercising their Gods-given rights to peacefully assemble and petition their government for redress of grievances, the government is taking away all of our freedoms bit-by-bit in the name of “security”, anti-gay bigots are popping up like zits, and we’ve got no Jobs, no Hope, and no Cash. How’s that hope and change working out, Obama? You’ve just made our course to oblivion a little slower.

* Some estimates put this figure at over 600,000. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is.

Stop letting money speak louder than democracy, and “security” override your freedom. Stop being sold the American dream they spend your money destroying behind your back. Tell them you’re finished with their status quo. It’s time for a change, one that neither Democrats nor Republicans will provide. We the People are taking our power back.

I heard of Steve’s passing two days ago. I was and am deeply saddened by his death. He was a great man, whose vision and innovation has globally shaped computers and the way we use them. His focus and attention to every detail is prevalent in every product Apple has sold on his watch.

The first computer I ever owned and used as a child was a Macintosh. Though it was a hand-me-down, it began my love of computers. The Macintosh’s significance increased as I got older—and it began assisting me with practically everything. It was my connection to a world of knowledge and like-minded people. And it helped me discover myself.

I watched Steve’s commencement speech at Stanford about a year ago. It was that speech that led me to really appreciate him as a person and not just for his work. And it was because of his speech that he became one of my heroes, and always will be. For everything he’s done, I’m thankful. I know he is not dead. His spirit lives on in every product he’s made, and in every person he’s marked with his expression.

To his family, friends, and co-workers: I only wish I was as lucky as you to know him, and to call him a friend. I am so very sorry for his loss.

To be governed is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the public interest, to be placed under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonored. That is government; that is its justice; that is its morality.

So I’ve been doing something I think is fun. For every site or service I’ve registered with lately that asks for my date of birth, I’ve been putting in 8 June 1949.

You may have guessed that’s not my real birthdate. So why do I put that date in? 8 June 1949 is the publishing date of Orwell’s novel 1984 1. Sites that ask for your date of birth are invading your privacy, and some services seek to control what you see, hear or read. For example, Hulu has content its arbitrary system considers ‘inappropriate’ blocked if you’re under the age of 18. So does YouTube, whose community has blocked things which are merely controversial, and absolutely safe, from being viewed by those under 18. Google blocks access to Google+ if you’re under 18, and Facebook doesn’t let you truly share posts publicly, either, even though many teenagers do know how to be safe on the Internet.

So just because some people think it’s wrong for minors to have access to the same media and knowledge, and some people think it’s OK to invade your privacy and gather your information to sell to advertisers, doesn’t mean you have to live with it.

Join my little movement; from now on you’re 62! Just please don’t take back the money you put into social security until you’re actually entitled to.

Notes:

Nineteen Eighty-Four ↩
