Occupy Internet

Internet Occupied Seal

By now you’ve heard of Occupy Wall Street and the worldwide Occupy movement it has inspired. As a webmaster who can’t occupy in person, I want to show my support for the movement and get more Occupiers out there.

Occupy Internet 1.0 is now available. OI is a basic file to turn your website into an occupied zone. With it, you have two options:

  1. Take your website completely offline and replace it with the “Website Occupied” page. This could really annoy your users and anger those who aren’t in favor of the Occupation, so if your site is critical to your livelihood, I suggest you choose option №2. Regardless, this option will have the biggest impact on your users.
  2. Occupy the home page of your site with a link through to your normal content. Smaller impact than taking your site completely offline, but you show your solidarity and your normal flow of visitors will only be affected slightly.

Ready? Let’s start your occupation!

  1. Rename your current index file (e.g.: index.php, to home.php) so it isn’t overwritten by the Occupy Internet page, and so OI will take precedence over your normal index file.
  2. Right click and select “Save As…” for the following two links:
  3. Open index.html in your favorite text editor and add the information specific to your site where the comments are.
  4. Upload index.html and oiseal.gif to your site with their original names. Make sure they’re both in the same directory.

That’s it! Happy Occupying.
